With today’s quality shaving tools and products, it’s really easy to get a great shave and smooth, healthy skin. There’s no reason to suffer through daily redness, bumps, razor burn, nicks and cuts if you follow these guidelines. In fact, many men now look forward to shaving as a fun daily ritual using cool razors and brushes, rich and smooth shaving creams, and outstanding aftershave balms packed with antioxidants.
- Start With A Sharp Razor Blade – Replace your blade often because a dull blade results in irritation and nicks. A good rule of thumb is to replace your blade at least once a week but many men change blades after four or five shaves. Don’t try to save a few pennies by using your blade too many times. We prefer razors with a well balanced and nicely weighted handle. DO NOT USE PLASTIC DISPOSABLE RAZORS.
- Shave During or After Taking A Shower – Many men have found shaving during or after a shower to be very beneficial. The warm water from the shower oftens the beard and lets the blade glide more easily over the face. Ideally, you should expose your face for three to five minutes of warm steam and water before actually shaving. If you don’t have time for a shower, thoroughly wet your face with warm water.
- Lather-Up With A Shaving Brush – Using a shaving brush is probably the best step to improving a man’s shaving results and clearing up shaving irritations. Lather-up your shaving cream, gel, or soap with a shaving brush and warm to hot water (not scalding). Apply a thin, even layer and don’t use more than you need. If you use too much, your razor will skip and clog.
Shaving brushes lift the beard from the face and soften the hair so the razor gives you a closer shave. Shaving brushes help reduce shaving irritation, razor burn, and ingrown hairs. The brushes are also great fun to use and bring some ceremony to the process. Be sure to rinse off your brush well when you’re done.
- Use the Good Stuff – Don't skimp on the quality of your shaving cream or gel. Select from the brands at our site that use effective and outstanding ingredients. Stay away from the cheap creams, gels, or foams in cans often sold at drugstores. They often have irritating and numbing ingredients such as alcohol, menthol, mint, potassium, sodium hydroxide, camphor, and benzocaine resulting in a poorer shave. The gels and creams we sell do a more effective job than airy foams. Never use ordinary soap as it will dry out your skin.
- Easy Does It – Lightly shave in the direction of the beard growth and let the razor do the work. Many men apply too much pressure on their razors and unnecessarily scrape off too much skin. Shave any problem spots last because the shaving cream will have more time to take effect. Frequently rinse your blade in hot water.
- Use an Aftershave Balm – After shaving, rinse your face and then apply a moisturizing aftershave without alcohol. After all, you've just removed a layer of skin. Your face will look and feel much better if you apply an aftershave balm. Too many men run out the door after shaving without applying an aftershave. It only takes seconds and only costs pennies a day. Do not apply alcohol or anything that stings your face (that stinging sensation that our fathers learn to love is irritating the skin). If you like a particular scented cologne, only apply it behind the ears, neck area, and wrists - don’t put any cologne directly on your face because colognes have irritating alcohol.
