Choosing a scent for a man can be a bit overwhelming as there are now an astounding number of men's fragrances on the market which can range from light, citrus modern scents to deeper, stronger, more classical scents. Making it even more complicated, are the many different types of fragrances which typically are Aftershaves, Colognes, and Eau de Toilettes.
No matter the type, most male fragrances are made up of many different scents called notes.
- TOP NOTES - the scents you first smell when applied to the skin. These are light scents and last for about 5 to 10 minutes.
- MIDDLE NOTES - the most notable scents which distinguish the product's personality and become more noticeable after about 15 minutes.
- BOTTOM NOTES - the heaviest scents which last for several hours on your skin.
Over time and the flood of new products, the definitions have become somewhat blurred and sometimes overlap. Here are some guidelines to help you through the scent maze.
AFTERSHAVE - Aftershaves usually contain 1% to 3% perfume oil.
- The fragrance doesn't last too long - about 2 hours.
- Good for the office and day events.
- Aftershaves are usually a lotion, gel or a balm. Many aftershave lotions can sting and dry out your skin because they contain antiseptics like alcohol. Aftershave balms and most aftershave gels soothe the skin and help it look better without using irritating alcohol.
- Only put aftershave on your face - don't put it on your wrists or behind your ears. The well-known stinging and sometimes drying sensation from an aftershave is due to the alcohol content.
COLOGNE- Colognes usually contain 2% to 5% perfume oil.
- The scent lasts several hours.
- Apply either to the wrists, neck, or behind the ears. Use sparingly.
- Office and casual event colognes usually have lighter scents while evening colognes are more sophisticated.
EAU DE TOILETTE- Eau De Toilettes usually containt 4% to 8% perfume oil.
- The scent lasts several hours and is fairly strong.
- Apply either to the wrists, neck, or behind the ears. Use sparingly
- Best used in the evening as they may be too strong for the day or office.
