It's simple to take care of shaving brush. With the proper care, a badger shaving brush should easily last 10 to 15 years.
After each shave, rinse the brush thoroughly with hot (not scalding) water to remove lather and flick it a bit to shake off most of the remaining moisture. Hang the brush on a stand so the water drips down away from the base of the hairs. If you do not have a stand, leave the brush standing on its base rather than sitting horizontally on it's side.
Never keep a damp brush in a closed medicine chest or bag for any length of time. Do not use boiling water, harsh cleansers or a hair dryer on a badger shave brush. If a brush starts to have a musty or weird smell, you are probably not cleaning it properly after each shave or waiting too long between shaves to clean it. Remember, clean your brush after EACH shave.
If you find your brush has a thick build-up of soap, scum or mildew, try using some shampoo on the brush for a minute and then give the brush a good rinse. Another cleaning method is soaking the brush in a solution of Borax for about 15 minutes. |
