Parabens are commonly used preservatives in skin care products to prevent the growth of bacteria. There are a number of chemical sounding names that are all considered parabens. These include: - Methylparaben
- Ethylparaben
- Propylparaben
- Butylparaben
- Benzylparaben
- Benzyl-parahydroxybenzoic Acid
- Butyl-parahydroxybenzoic Acid
- Methyl-parahydroxybenzoic Acid
- Parahydroxybenzoate
- Propyl-parahydroxybenzoic Acid
The safety of parabens in skincare products has become a hot topic of discussion over the past few years with some consumers becoming alarmed over reported links to cancer. However, there has not been any conclusive scientific evidence proving any negative effects of parabens used in skin care or shaving products.
According to Dr. Peter L. Pugliese, MD, in an article called "Parabens: Paradox or Paranoia?"
"More than 10,000 cosmetic products contain parabens and millions of people use these products every day. Considering this, a significant increase in many types of cancer should have occurred during the past 20 years, when, in fact, the incidence rates of several cancers have decreased, including those of the breast, stomach, lung, colon, rectum and cervix."
Despite the lack of evidence, some companies are now producing "paraben-free" products and substituting natural ingredients for the parabens such as Vitamin E or Tea Tree Oil among others. If you are concerned about parabens, look for products clearly labeled as "paraben free".
If we find any new information about parabens, we will make it available on our site. The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has a page on parabens with current information.
